Goals
The lecture will gain practical knowledge and experience on; Soil has many functions in the ecosystem with its live, dynamic and heterogeneous structure; growth and development media for plants; decomposition of wastes, filtering the wastes, natural cycling of all macro-micro elements (C, N, S, and so on) take place in soil; determination of important soil properties which are essential for plant growth; calculations of plant available soil water; introducing some soil and plant analysis.
Content
Pedosphere, soil formation, decomposition, soil texture, clay minerals, soil organic matter, edaphone, cation exchange capacity, soil acidity, soil structure, soil water, soil temperature, soil colour, soil aeration, plant nutritions, soil formation factors.

Learning Outcomes
1) Understands that soil is not a simple living media, but a dynamic entity with organic and inorganic structure.
2) Estimates the roles of bedrock, topography, time, climate and living organisms on soil formation and their roles on the characteristics of soils.
3) Understands that soils do not only have impact on the plant growth, yield and quality characteristics, but also have significant effects on obtaining safe food and human health.
4) Understands the variation of agricultural practices such as irrigation, fertilization and soil tillage according to soil properties.
5) Understands that soil filters and buffers environmental pollutants in terms of the ecological balance.
6) Understands that if soil losses agricultural characteristics, soil can not gain back the production function and soil features can not be recovered to the previous level
