Goals
The course aims to familiarize students with the concept of persuasion, in the classical expression of the term and so called term of today, compliance/gaining discourse along with the related theoretical aspects and principles which will enable students to recognize linguistic and non linguistic compliance-gaining structures in the public,institutional and interpersonal discourse and hence develop necessary skills not only to produce such discourses but also to resist through anti -discourses.
Content
Starting with a brief introduction of the concept of persuasion through a historical perspective grounded in the Aristotelian rhetoric, the course will include the presentation of the related theoretical aspects, principles and models of compliance-gaining discourse basically focusing on the impact of the features/aims of the interactants (the source and the target audience) and socio cultural factors such as education and Mass media etc. Also how compliance-gaining discourse operates in the cases of assymmetrical or symmetrical power relationship and ethical issues will be of important consideration while authentic texts will be used in and out class applications.
