Goals
This course mainly deals with the basic principles involved in materials selection based on the properties of materials and how the tests are conducted to obtain information about the mechanical properties of engineering materials

Properties of materials. Static properties. Stress and strain. Modulus of elasticity. Resilience. Ductility and brittleness. Toughness. Hardness. Brinell hardness test. Rockwell hardness test. Vickers hardness test. Microhardness tests. Dynamic properties. Impact test. Metal fatigue. Creep of metals. Non-destructive testing. The detection of surface cracks. The detection of internal defects. Physical properties of engineering materials. Engineering materials. Types of cast irons and their designations. Steels. Plain carbon steels. Alloy steels. Learning Outcomes
1) Describe mechanical, pyhsical and chemical properties of engineering materials and understand the effect of various factors on the properties of materials
2) Understand how the properties of materials can be tested and interpret the resuls
3) Understand how the strength of materials can be enhanced according to he loading conditions
4) Classify commonly used ferrous metals
5) Understand the effect of alloying elements on the properties of plain carbon steels and select proper type of steel according to service conditions
6) Understand the designation of cast irons and steels
7) Select materials for specific uses based on the properties, characteristics, and service of the materials
8) Understand the basic principles of non destructive testing methods and select a proper test for the detetection of required defects
