Course Goal / Objective

To understand the tectonic events and forces that plays an important role in shaping the earth´s crust and to understand the effects of forces on the rocks. In this concept, to gain the ability of interpretation of the structural elements formed in the nature. -To gain the knowledge about plate movements and formation of earthquakes on the earth´s crust. - To provide the students better understand the theoretical backgrounds of the plate tectonic theory and the motion of lithospheric plates and the consequence of these motions. -To gain ability to make tectonic interpratation on the prepared geological maps.

Course Content

Introduction, Regional structural elements of earth, Lithosphere, astenosphere, crust, mantle; Alfred Wegener´s continental drifting hypotesis; Plate boundaries; Divergent plate boundaries; Oceanic ridges, ophiolite and ophiolitic mélanges; Island arcs, magmatic arc, volcanic arc; Continental rifts; Evolution of passive continental margins; Convergent plate boundaries; Transform plate boundaries; Transform faults and evidence of plate motions; Plate Tectonics and orogenic belts; Seismic properties, earthquakes, tsunamis; Geosynclines, Shields, Platforms, Blocks; General properties of orogenic belts; Origin of orogens, Tectonic Evolution of the Anatolia.
