General Information

The program of Fisheries Basic Sciences is comprised of three departments namely Marine Biology, Inland Waters Biology and basic sciences.7 professors, 4 and 3 research assistants, four of them are doctors, are working in the department. Our advanced degree expert staff continue to education and research activities in various fields of fisheries basic Sciences. Topics such as systematics, distribution, ecology, biology, population Dynamics of aquatic organisms, sustainable use and management of aquatic ecosystems, determine the effect of pollutants to aquatic organisms in natural and experimental environments, monitoring of ecosystems, endangered and invasive species, geographic information systems, remote sensing, algal biotechnology, genetic studies are conducted in marine and inland water ecosystems. These studies are carried out on the sea, inland waters in our region,at the marine, inland water research stations and our laboratories of our faculty.

Feature & Definition

The program is one of the rare departments which offers a detailed education about the aquatic environment, and therefore it is distinguished among similar others thanks to its well-equipped research laboratory and research boats. Depending on their choices, students have the opportunity to select from a wide range of elective courses from Department of Fisheries basic science or other related departments. Thus, graduates, using both individual and interdiciplinary studies, are capable of identifying the problems and providing solutions related to basic sciences.

Goals

The aim of this programme to educate the researchers and experts at PhD level who has ecological perspective in Fisheries Basic Sciences for use sustainable of nature aquatic ecosystem.

Objectives

The program is educate PhD graduates who to develop theoretical and practical knowledge at the level of expertise in the light of scientific and technological developments in the field of Marine Biology, Inland Waters Biology and Fisheries Basic Sciences; to conducts research to ensure the sustainability and the best use of natural resources aquatic resources; achieve the modern knowledge, skills and techniques required by the sector at the level national and international and make evaluations accordingly.

Specific Admission Requirements

The students can apply to this program providing ALES score, master point averages and interview in accordance with the regulations of “Çukurova University Graduate Education and Examination Committee” and can pursue their education in their or in related fields.

Qualification Awarded

The students who have successfully accomplished this program gain the doctor of philosophy (PhD) of Fisheries Basic Science.

Qualification Requirements of Graduation

The duration of completing the doctoral program is eight semesters regardless of whether they are registered or not, and the maximum time for successfully completing the necessary courses for the doctoral program is four semesters for those who are accepted with a master's degree with thesis. During the doctoral education, the student must take at least 240 ECTS credits. If he/she prepares a thesis on a subject belonging to the student department for at least four years and presents it to the Jury, if he/she is successful in his/her thesis, he/she is deemed to have deserved the "Doctor of Science" degree in the field of Fisheries.

Access to Further Studies

PhD graduates may apply to get a position in academic staff or to governmental research centres to get expert position.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates providing they acquire the minimum required points from KPSS (Selection of Public Servants Examination) could be employed by Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Fisheries Research Institutions, Ministry of of Water Affairs and Forestry, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Water Management, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, and Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. In private sector, they can also be employed in inland and marine aquaculture units, Processing factories, private laboratories, research and project companies, and Civil Society Organizations. Furthermore, they can be employed as academics in Universities.
