Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to examine editing techniques within the broader context of film language and cinematic expression, enabling students to analyze editing processes through narrative, aesthetic, and ideological dimensions. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between parts and the whole, critically engage with the interplay of sound and image, and explore how different editing strategies impact cinematic storytelling. By exploring key paradigms in the history of film editing, the course encourages students to assess the historical evolution of editing practices and their theoretical foundations. Ultimately, students will be able to recognize editing not merely as a technical tool, but as a fundamental component in shaping cinematic meaning and artistic expression.
Course Content
This course examines the evolution of editing techniques from the early history of cinema to contemporary filmmaking. Focusing on the narrative, aesthetic, and formal functions of editing, it explores different editing approaches that have emerged across various historical contexts. Editing practices, including those of classical narrative cinema, Soviet montage theory, experimental cinema, and contemporary digital editing, are examined from a comparative perspective. Students analyze the impact of editing structures on cinematic storytelling through film scenes, discuss the aesthetic and ideological dimensions of editing choices, and evaluate key turning points in the history of film editing through selected examples. The course also introduces audio editing techniques used in radio programs and podcasts, as well as AI-assisted editing applications and the principles of their ethical use. Emphasizing that editing is not merely a technical process but also a fundamental means of meaning-making in cinema and other audiovisual media, the course examines the evolving role of editing techniques within the changing media landscape.
