Course Goal / Objective

The purpose of this course is to aid the student in developing a personal eclectic approach to counseling and psychotherapy.

Introduction and evaluation of the principal theoretical approaches to counseling and psychotherapy. Exploration of techniques and methods in group and individual counseling

LO02 Demonstrate appropriate sensitivity to clients and their cultural background
LO03 Demonstrate a working knowledge of the philosophical concepts underlying the various counseling theories
LO04 Demonstrate understanding and use of the following counseling theories: Classical Psychoanalytic Theory, Post- and Neo-Freudian Theories, Individual Psychology, Person-Centered Therapy, Existential Therapy and Gestalt Therapy
LO05 Discuss how the above theories relate to individual counseling, group counseling
LO06 Discuss efforts to research and validate various theories of counseling and empirically validated techniques
