Course Goal / Objective
To reveal the relationships between history and communication. 2. To reveal that the history of communication is not just the history of tools in terms of chronology. 3. To give a critical perspective related to the concepts of history and communication. 4. To show that the discussions on communication and history cannot be limited to the reality of only one paradigm. 5. To examine the historical developments of communication tools. 6. To examine the communication types which are dominant from their starting point until today. 7. To reveal the relationships between history, writing history, knowledge, power and dominant communication types. 8. To reveal why analysis which is examined within the frame of social, political, cultural and economic relationships of the examined period of time in the analyses of the history of communication.
Course Content
Oral culture / cultural distinction in writing, paper, books, printing, and the first communication systems (Persians, Romans, et al.), The birth of modern journalism: penny newspapers, communication control, the Industrial Revolution and the message (the factory system, mass production, etc.), the world communication and the Ottoman Empire, a short history of printing and the press, the telegraph today the development of telecommunications (visual telegraph, electric telegraph, telephone, et al.), internet and social media
