Course Goal / Objective

This course mainly deals with the basic principles involved in materials selection based on the properties of materials and how the tests are conducted to obtain information about the mechanical properties of engineering materials.

Properties of materials. Static properties. Stress and strain. Modulus of elasticity. Resilience. Ductility and brittleness. Toughness. Hardness. Brinell hardness test. Rockwell hardness test. Vickers hardness test. Microhardness tests. Dynamic properties. Impact test. Metal fatigue. Creep of metals. Non-destructive testing. The detection of surface cracks. The detection of internal defects. Physical properties of engineering materials. Engineering materials. Types of cast irons and their designations. Steels. Plain carbon steels. Alloy steels.
