Course Goal / Objective
Introducing Egypt as an important example of an early state society that developed independently of previously existing state societies, and examining the archaeological and artistic remains of the early Egyptian civilization.
Course Content
Geography and environment of northeast Africa; early-middle Holocene climate history and human reactions to it; early farming villages in Egypt; early towns (e.g. Hierakonpolis and Abydos) and the foundations of pharaonic Egypt; the tombs, architecture, art and foreign relations of Old Kingdom Egypt.
