Course Goal / Objective

The purpose of this course is to expose the students to Newton s Laws of motion, to show them how these laws can be applied to various problems and to show how the resulting equations can be solved. The students are supposed to have taken the standart math and physics courses in their freshman and sophomore years.

Course Content

Newton s law of motion, Momentum, Kinetic Energy, Potential energy, Force and conservative force, Basic force in nature, Harmonic oscilator, resonance, The gravitational force, Central force, Motion under central force, Inverse square law, Planet motion and Kepler laws

Course Learning Outcomes

LO02 Defines the kinetic energy, potential energy and energy concepts and can use them adequately.
LO03 Knows the concepts of force and conservative force, the fundamentals forces of nature and the appliacation range of each one of them.
LO04 Writes down the equation of motion for harmonic oscillators and solves them under various conditions; knows the concept of resonance.
LO05 Awares of the gravitational force, can calculate the gravitational force applied by a body of certain geometry to a point particle. Knows the gravitational potential and can calculate it for badies of various geometries.
LO06 Knows the central force and its basic properties.
LO07 Knows how to solve for the orbital equation of a particle under a central force.
LO08 Knows the orbit of a particle under an inverse square force field and the properties of the orbit.
LO09 Has knowledge about the motion of planets and Kepler s laws of motion.
