Course Goal / Objective
1. To examine the main theories and theorists in the area of communication. 2. To detect the influence of American tradition that has laid the foundation in the area of communication. 3. To be able to put forth the effects of the dominant paradigms and theoretical approaches on science, education and the other areas of social life. 4. To be able to synthesize the relationships between theory and practice. 5. To reveal what kind of solutions the theories can present for the social problems. 6. To make the inter-disciplines quality of communication visible by revealing the different areas of social sciences like history, sociology and psychology on the communication theories. 7. To analyze the relationships between communication theories and social structure. 8. To be able to conduct the readings of the theoretical approaches within the mainstream approaches critically.
Course Content
In this course will be discussed mass communication theories. Normative individualism theory, System Theory, Critical Theory, Frankfurt School, The School of Birmingham, Structuralism, Social-psychological and epistemological approaches in communication and mass communication; theories about the effect and usage of mass communication media; theoretical approaches and theories about media.
