Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to enable students to use current molecular diagnostic methods in the diagnosis of parasitic diseases.

Course Content

This course covers the general characteristics of basic parasite groups causing economic losses and death in animals and molecular techniques (PCR, PCR-RFLP, PCR-SSCP, RAPD-PCR, DNA Sequencing, Real Time PCR) used in the diagnosis of parasitic diseases.

LO01 Students will learn basic terminology of parasitology science, nomenclature, host-parasite relationship and parasitism types.
LO02 Students will learn modes of development, reproduction, transmission and basic clinical signs of protozoan, helminth and arthropods.
LO03 Students will learn collection and preservation of parasites and DNA isolation from parasitic agents
LO04 Students will have information about molecular diagnostic methods used in veterinary parasitology such as PCR, PCR-RFLP, PCR-SSCP, RAPD-PCR, DNA Sequencing and Real Time PCR.
