Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to equip students with theoretical and empirical works on transnational migration and population movements in parallel to communications and media studies and how these reflect in practice, particularly in Turkish case. In addition, in the context of diaspora and cinema, it is aimed that students be able to make critical analysis of films by making sense of the conceptual tools and following the examples.
Course Content
In this course, the changing relations between communication technologies, media and transnational identities will be examined within the framework of cultural flows, especially in the context of intensifying migration dynamics. Discussions will be made around the concepts of nation-state, national borders, mediated individual and social interactions, public and public spaces, globalization, cosmopolitanism, transnationalism and diaspora. In addition, the course is designed to examine the visual culture in the diaspora cinema with the theoretical approaches to the diaspora and migration studies.
