Course Goal / Objective

By the end of the course students should be familiar with a range of ideas about basic questions in linguistics and be able to discuss these ideas with care and precision.

Course Content

This course explores a range of broad, general questions which arise within linguistics, in particular: What is language, How should language be investigated, What is the relation between language and mind, How does language relate to communication, It seeks to familiarize students with the answers that have been given to such questions by linguists and others and to accustom students to thinking about such matters. It also considers some of the criticisms that have been advanced against the answers that are generally assumed within contemporary mainstream linguistics.
