Course Goal / Objective

Pharmacognosy being one of the disciplines of pharmacy aims to develop a clear understanding of natural products (found in plants,fungi,marine organism and others) that are used therapeutically in medicine.

Course Content

Introduction to pharmacognosy, chemistry of medicinal plants, carbohydrates, glycosides, tannins, lipids, plant enzymes.

LO01 Describes the chemical structure and biosynthesis of active ingredients found in herbal drugs.
LO02 Explain the pharmacological phenomena and mechanisms of these active compounds.
LO03 Students will be able to list the morphology, cultivation, collection, drying and storage of medicinal plants.
LO04 Describes the morphology, cultivation, collection and drying of Medicinal Plants.
LO05 Students will list the active constituents of medicinal plants.
LO06 Students will be able to set up quality control procedures for quantitative and qualitative evaluation.
LO07 Explains the physical and chemical properties, formulas, preparation, quantification and identification of active compounds.
LO08 List pharmacological activity of medicinal plants and active compounds.
LO09 Students will be able to list certain major components of fixed drug combinations.
LO10 Identifies plants that should be used with caution due to toxicity or allergenic effects.
