Course Goal / Objective

Teaching how works of art left by prehistoric societies can be interpreted from their traces.

Course Content

If we consider that the various forms and styles of art are wrapped up in the culture of societies, in analyzing art we in fact are examining the societies out of which art comes. For this analysis to be possible in early periods, starting with the earliest periods in which people made art, prehistoric art examines the social structures of the societies to which it belongs along with the patterned materials and kinds of spiritual behavior of society. The 'Prehistoric Art I' course will first focus on what might be the content of art and its perception. Then Palaeolithic art will be discussed generally, in parallel with signs of art's impact on people. Lastly, an ethnographic approach to art and the application of this approach to archaeological interpretation studies will be introduced.
