Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to help students develop an ability to critically engage with the current debates on democracy and to analyze the problems associated with existing democratic models in the context of globalization.
Course Content
This course focuses on the theory and practice of democracy. It aims to examine the key themes and issues as well as contemporary debates in relation to the study of democratic politics today. Among the issues are the definition of who the people are, the value and limits of majority rule and the protection of minorities, the complex relationship between liberty and equality, sovereignty and freedom, democracy and constitutionalism, and democracy and Islam.
