Course Goal

The main aim of this lecture is to teach the basics of machine design, including the design process, failure prevention under static and variable loading.

LO02 Applies factor of safety and Knows safety philosophy and applies it in design.
LO03 Determines the stresses and defeclections on machine members subjected to single, 3D or combined loading.
LO04 Knows static and fatigue failure theories and applies these to design machine members to prevent failures resulting from static or variable loading.
LO05 Designs shafts and shaft components considering both deflection and stresses. Determines limits and fits for mating parts.
LO06 Designs power screws for various needs.
LO07 Selects suitable fasteners for all types of connections.
LO08 Designs nonpermanent joints subjected to static and variable loading with preload.
LO09 Selects the suitable connections for permanent joints.
LO10 Designs and analysis permanent joints made using arc and resisting welding, bonding etc.
