Course Goal

This course is offered to students to understand the most commonly used activated sludge system in wastewater treatment. The aim of the course is to teach the student what the organisms in activated sludge do, how to use them in environmental engineering, what the indicator organisms do, how to interpret them if they are seen, and how to solve operational problems.

Course Content

Classification of Activated Sludge Microorganisms, their differences and common features, The importance of these microorganisms in terms of Environmental Engineering, Metabolic classification of Activated Sludge Microorganisms, what metabolic level the organism will do, How the process can be interpreted by looking at the state of activated sludge organisms in activated sludge systems, Sludge bulking, foaming, Zooglea sludge, Filamentous sludge, Identification of filamentous organisms, Morphology of flocs, Protozoa, Ciliata and its importance, interpretation, Flagellata and its importance, interpretation, Rhizopoda and its importance, interpretation, Actinopoda and its importance, interpretation, Metazoa and its importance, interpretation, activated sludge management problems.
