Course Goal

The aim of the course is to provide the students with the subject matter of language and linguistics with basic linguistic concepts through an overview of nature and universals of human language with its such aspects of sound structure and patterns, word and sentence structure, and the meanings of words and expressions.

Course Content

The course will cover several core areas of the nature and universals of human language with its differences to animal language systems, linguistics and its components, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, pragmatics and semiotics . In addition to these issues, fundamentals of first language acquisition, acquisition process, discourse, discourse analysis, speech acts and semiology will also be studied within the course.

LO01 Answers the questions: What is language? What is grammar? What is linguistics? Explains the relation of these three concepts. Understands and explains the basic concepts associated with the different branches of linguistics, such as Phonetics, Syntax, Semantics, Morphology, Pragmatics and Semiotics.
LO02 Knows the differences between human language and animal communication systems. Explains the concepts of single articulation, double articulation, syntax, abstract thinking.
LO03 Explains the core field of language, grammar and linguistic studies and how these fields advanced. Talks about the philosophers in Old Greece and the field of Rhetorics.
LO04 Knows about the myths, legends which have been mentioned in different cultures regarding the first language spoken in the world. Synthesizes the mentioned myths, legends.
LO05 Knows the components of linguistics and what they specifically study; Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, Semiotics.
LO06 Knows discourse analysis. Analyzes different text types (genres) via Discourse analysis.
LO07 Knows data collection methods. Knows how to code data. Interprets data. Explains the findings.
LO08 Knows about the fundamentals of first language acquisition. Knows the differences between acquisition and learning. Explains the first language acquisition process regarding children. Knows the stages of language acquisition. Learn about the process of language acquisition in children
LO09 Knows about the speech acts which are employed in children's discourse during the acquisiton process.
LO10 Analyzes children discourse by collecting natural data.
LO11 Analyzes various oral and written texts (formal speech, coloumns, advertisement texts) in terms of speech acts. Knows the differences between genres.
