Course Goal

To understand the tectonic events and forces that plays important role in shaping the earth's crust and understand the effects of forces on the rocks. In this concept, to gain the ability to interprete the structural elements formed in the nature. To gain knowledge about plate movements and formation of earthquakes on the earth's crust. To provide the students better understanding of the theoretical backgrounds of the plate tectonic theory and the motion of lithospheric plates and the consequence of these motions.

Course Content

Definition, General information about the earth, The concept of plate tectonics, the past, present and future, Plate movements data, Movement mechanism of plate tectonics, The events and structures occurring along the divergent plate boundaries, The events and structures occurring along the convergent plate boundaries, Transform Fault boundaries, Sea floor spreading, Continental drift, Oceanic crust, ophiolites, Volcanic mountain formation, Erathquakes, Rock assemblages defining the plate boundaries.

Course Learning Outcomes

Order Course Learning Outcomes
LO01 Understand the movements mechanism of the plates on earth's crust.
LO02 Understands and recognizes the concept of Plate Tectonics and important plates and platelets in the earth's crust.
LO03 Knows the precise tectonic setting of the shields and basins formed in relation with moving plates.
LO04 By detecting plate boundaries in the earth's crust, it can recognize earthquake zones that are expected to develop along these boundaries.
