Course Goal

Learn basic prenciples of sustainable biomass production from field crops.

Course Content

The inevitable depletion of fossil fuel sources and their adverse effects on the environment, particularly GHG emissions, have generated considerable interest in the utilization of biomass for the production of renewable energy. Several field crops such as miscanthus, switchgrass, sorghum, kenaf etc., are widely known to have a great potential as a biomass feedstock due to their high biomass yields, GHG savings, efficient resource (water, nitrogen, radiation, etc.,) uses, and lower input requirements. Aboveground biomass produced from these crops is combusted in a reactor to generate heat and electricity, thereby dependences on coal and natural gas dramatically decreased. In order to ensure sustainable biomass production, bioenergy crops must be cultivated with minimum input, management techniques must be applied properly, and the most suitable species must be chosen depending on the ecological conditions. Consequently, fundamental principles of sustainable biomass production will be discussed in this course.
