Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to provide graduate students studying in the field of soil science and plant production with expert knowledge on basic calculations on soil, plant nutrition and plant production.

Course Content

In this course, expert level information related to plant production is given on i) standard units and unit conversions, ii) unit conversions associated with temperature, growing degree days and thermal conductivity, iii) calculation of latitude/longitude, length, area and raties, iv) unit conversions related to fertilizers, v) nutrient removal and nutrient budgets, vi) soil physical properties and soil water, vii) molarity, concentration and stable isotopes, viii) estimation of planting rates, plant populations, corn and soybean yields, ix) forage crop and grain yield - moisture and shrinkage, x) soil pH, cation exchange capacity, base saturation, CEC and liming xi) soil salinity, sodicity and electrical conductivity, xii) evaluation of costs and benefits of management decisions, xiii) calculation in economic analysis in plant response trials, xiv) using partial derivatives to conduct an economic analysis on the impact of seeding density and N rates on yield.

LO02 Is equipped with expert-level knowledge of the calculations used to express soil properties related to soil fertility, and thus soil nutrition to plants.
LO03 Knows how to calculate the nutrients' removal by plants and nutrient budgets .
LO04 Has sufficient knowledge about the calculation of fertilizer rates to be applied and the economy of fertilization.
LO05 Gains sufficient knowledge about the expression and calculation of sowing rates, plant populations, corn, soybean yields, etc.
