Course Goal / Objective

To give general information about the importance of environmental geophysics in the determination of industrial and residential areas, and to teach how to determine the dynamic soil parameters, solid and liquid waste storage areas, karstic cavities, underground ammunition, geological structure of nuclear waste storage areas, underground water pollution, freshwater-saltwater interventions and underground water pollution by geophysical methods.

Course Content

What is environmental geophysics. What are the application areas. Which methods are applied; Geophysical methods to determine the dynamic soil parameters used to determine the location of industrial zones and organized industrial areas; Geophysical methods of determination of the dynamic soil parameters used to determine the location of urban settlements; Detection the impact of mining operations on the environment by by geophysical methods; Geophysical investigation of ground selection and soil properties of hydroelectric power plants; Geophysical investigation of ground selection and soil properties of nuclear power plants; Use of geophysical methods in the selection of the areas where solid wastes will be stored; Use of geophysical methods in the selection of the areas where liquid wastes will be stored; Determination of karstic gaps using geophysical methods; Determination the locations of Embedded ammunition and hazardous substances by geophysical methods; Investigation the pollution of soil and underground water; Determination the areas of fresh water and salt water interference zones; Investigation and determination of areas filled with sedimentary material or filled with waste materials; Conservation of protected areas, water basins and wetlands, and continuous monitoring of pollution risks by using geophysical methods, the importance of geophysical studies in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) applications.
