Course Goal

To help students understand the basic principles and aplications of chip-type machining processes, calculate and select turning and millinge parametrs, understand the basic principles and aplications of thermal joining processes

Course Content

Chip-type machining processes. Forces in cutting. Energy and power in machining. Cutting fluids. Cutting tools for machining. Tool materials. Tool geometry. Tool failure and tool life. Turning and related processes. Shaping and planing. Finishing processes. Milling. Milling cutters. Welding processes. Oxyfuel gas welding. Shielded metal arc welding; electrodes, electrode coatings, arc blow. Gas metal arc welding. Submerged arc welding. Plasma arc welding. Resistance welding. Other welding processes. Distortion in welding. Brazing and soldering. Braze welding.

LO01 Knows the type and use of mechanical springs
LO02 Obtains stress and deflection expressions and determines stress and deflections on helical springs
LO03 Designs and analyzes compression, tension and torsional springs under static and fatigue loads considering their critical frequencies.
LO04 Selects appropriate bearing by knowing characteristics of journal and rolling contact bearings.
LO05 Selects ball, roller and tapered rolling contact bearings by considering the bearing loads, and applies hem in design applications under lubrication.
LO06 Knows the type of lubrication forms (hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, boundary lubrication etc.) and selects the appropriate one.
LO07 Designs journal bearings under pressure-fed or under hydrodynamic conditions considering the bearing optimization technique.
LO08 Knows the type of gears and selects the appropriate one for an application
LO09 Designs all types of gears (spur, helical, bevel and worm gears) used on gear boxes
LO10 Knows the characteristics of clutches, brakes, couplings and flywheels.
