Course Goal / Objective

The aim of the course is to give students an introduction to modern optical communication devices and systems such that they have a fundamental understanding of the operation and design of optical fiber links.

Motivation for fiber optic communication, Overview of optical Communication, Optical transmitters, Optical sources, Intensity modulation, Laser diodes, Signals and representations, Digital modulation, Optical receivers, Optical modulators, Review of EM theory, Dispersion in fibers, Attenuation in fibers, Modes in optical fiber, Optical system design, Optical amplifiers, BER and OOK systems, Eye diagrams, Modulation techniques, Detectors, Photodiodes
