Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to establish a theoretical basis on the aesthetic, cultural and sociological contents of the concepts of modernity, modernism and modern cinema. Cinema was invented in modern culture. Its technical ontology is based on the paradigm of progress and the scientific thought inherent in it. The way films construct narratives through moving images and montage is similar to the cognitive understanding of modern humans. On the other hand, sociological phenomena of modernity such as the city, the leisure time, the culture industry, which has become a production-consumption industry, are directly related to the development of cinema. These phenomena also affected other forms of art. Aesthetic modernism first appeared in painting. The forms of expression belonging to aesthetic modernism were reflected in the cinema, and the expression forms of the cinema were reflected in other art forms. This is the first period of modern cinema and its second period is reflected in the films after World War II. During the course, this information will be transferred by examining the relevant resources.
