Course Goal

The aim of this course is to teach the importance, ecological requirements, spreads, succession, niche, and the use as biological indicators of algae in freshwater ecosystems.

Course Content

Introduction (primary producers, inland water ecosystems, planktonic and benthic algae, shape and size), Algae habitats and community, Systematics of algae (Cyanobacter, Chlorophyce, Diatoms, other groups), Algae are physical factors, Algae chemical factors, Succession and growth, Algae dispersion, succession, and biogeography, Algae interactions with other organisms, Algae niche in freshwater ecosystems, Pollution and algae, The use of algae in paleolimnology, Sampling, biomass estimation, counting.
