Course Goal / Objective
To raise awareness about the social changes historically brought by the modernization that emerged in the West. Modernization theory as applied to Turkey to discuss their impact on the modernization. Contemporary issues such as globalization, migration, east-west segregation, alienation and urbanization are discussed in the frame of modernization theories. To discuss the positive and strong aspects of modernization as well as its negative and weak points.
Course Content
The theories of modernization that emerged in the 18th century and that have continued up to today; They cover classical modernization, modernization of industrial revolution, poststructuralism, postcolonial and postindustrial periods. They also include social change issues such as the abolition of slavery, the emergence of the individual, the emergence of feminist theories and movements, and the marginalization of society.
