Course Goal / Objective
The main objective of this course to strengthen the academic literacy of the learners.
Course Content
Empowering academic literacy skills involves building knowledge and skills in two areas. The first is of technical aspect such as summarizing, paraphrasing, sentence and paragraph level word choices, frequently used language patterns. The second comprises disciplinary components about how texts are constructed in our particular subject area. The course will further develop the language and genre-based skills that needed to comprehend, organise and produce particular types of texts in graduate studies. This course is organised considering these important academic styles on evaluative texts academic essays and reviews and research reports essays, and empirical reports in theses and dissertations. A particular focus will be given on the various kinds of metadiscourse strategies that writers use to organise information coherently and persuasively in the text, and to express the writers’ own attitudes through the use of strategies.
