Course Goal

Introducing and teaching classical theological texts

Course Content

1 The earliest written literature in Islamic theology: al-Hasan al-Basri’s Risala fi l-qadar. 2 The early credal epistles: al-Fiqh al-akbar of Abu Hanifa. 3 The early Mutazili texts: al-Nazzam’s Kitab al-naqd. 4 The works in the formative period of Ashariyya: al-Ashari’s al-Ibana an Usul a-diyana. 5 The works in the formative period of Maturidiyya: al-Maturidi’s Kitab al-tawhid.
