Course Goal / Objective

To have a general knowledge about bacteria, to know the differences between pathogen and non-pathogenic bacteria, to know the surface properties of bacteria in bacteria and to have information about bacterial genome and to learn gene transfer between bacteria.

Course Content

General information about bacteria. Bacteria reproduction. Cellular structures of bacteria. Intracellular structures. External structures of bacteria; surface extensions (delete, flagel, pilus). Bacterial genome; DNA, RNA. Regulation of gene functions in bacteria, operon theory. Mutations in bacteria. Bacteriophages, morphological structures, classification. Life cycles of phages. Transformation of genetic material between bacteria, Transformation. Genetic transfer of bacteria, Conjugation. Transfer of genetic material between bacteria, transduction. Plasmids.
