Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to discuss scientific information about ergogenic aids and doping practices used to improve athletes' performance within an ethical and legal framework. From nutritional, psychological and pharmacological perspectives, understanding the safety of ergogenic aids and their effects on the human body, the risks and harms that may be encountered in the application of doping substances and strategies to prevent their use will be discussed. Students will gain the skills to comprehend the differences between ergogenic aids and doping, to manage the health and performance of athletes in the best way within the framework of ethical rules and to understand current practices in the fight against doping. In addition, in their professional lives, as athletes or athlete support staff, it is aimed that they will have all the information about how a doping control process takes place, especially their rights and responsibilities if they are faced with a doping control. At the same time, it is aimed to create clean sport awareness and emphasize the importance of the fair play principle.
Course Content
“Ergogenic Aid and Anti-Doping” course deals with the issues of ergogenic aids and doping to improve the performance of athletes in a scientific, ethical and legal framework. Basic concepts such as ergogenic aid, doping, the place of ergogenic aid and doping in sports sciences will be explained, information about WADA (world anti-doping agency) and other international organizations will be given. In addition, types of ergogenic aids and their effects will be explained. In the sub-headings, popular supplements such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, sports drinks, electrolyte balance, creatine, beta-alanine, caffeine will be explained in detail. On the other hand, physiological ergogenic aids will also be taught. After the history and development of doping, types of doping (anabolic steroids, peptide hormones, stimulants, diuretics and masking agents, blood doping...) and their effects on human health will be explained. Anti-doping and legal regulations are another important point of the course. WADA's banned list and testing processes will be explained in detail. Doping penalties and sanctions will be discussed under this title.
