Course Goal / Objective

Pharmaceutical Botany or Pharmacobotany, pharmaceutical Botany, is an applied branch of botanical science. In this course, medicinal plants carrying pharmaceutical active substances and Drogs obtained from their various organs are given information about the active substances they cover, where they are used. Classification of medicinal plants, i.e. Systematics, scientific nomenclature and plant diagnosis; systematic sorting of medicinal plants in various plant groups, especially vascular plants, from an evolutionary point of view; introduction of poisonous and economic plants; Flora and plant biodiversity of Turkey; introduction of natural and medicinal plants of Turkey and innovations related to medicinal plants are among the aims of the course of pharmaceutical Botany.

Course Content

Flora of Turkey and Plant Systematics. Definition of pharmaceutical Botany and its importance in pharmacy, general concepts. Nomenclature and classification of plants and Drogs, biological active compounds of plants and Drogs. Cryptogam plants and classification used in the production of vaccines, serum and antibiotics. Bacteriophyta, Cyanophyta, Phycophyta, Mycophyta, lichens, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Spermatophyta; Gymnospermae and Angiospermae; characteristics of monocotyl and Dicotyl plants, comparison. Important families, plants, drugs, active substances, effects and uses in terms of Pharmacy. Distribution and use of Medicinal Plants of Turkey. Herbarium, creating herbarium material, the importance of herbarium in terms of Pharmacy
