Course Goal / Objective

History of Communication course as a basic subject of Communication Studies aims to focus on the developments in communication and to help students to gain a broad historical perspective and be able to analyze the impact of those developments at present.

Course Content

The course content contains; the phases and historical development of history of communication, the structure of society in historic periods, impact of political movements on development, the importance of technological developments, teaching about the current situation and problems of media in the frame of political-economical and ideological structuring. The following subjects will be discussed in a historical perspective: the relation between communication and history, theoretical approach, society and correspondence (communication), the development process of communication, gathering news and broadcasting, printing of news in different ages, the emergence and development of the press, the developments in Turkey and in the world on ages, the development of the telegraph and the telephone, news agencies,freedom of the pres and the censorship, the developments on visual technologies and the constitution of mass society, coming into being and development of radio-cinema and television, BBC and the origins of public service broadcasting , political freedom gaining process of television, development of information technologies, founding of TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) and the private television channels, the relation between media and democracy, globalization and economical networks in global medium, the current situation of the media and related movements and phenomenons.

LO09 Examines how political, economic, technological, sociological and ideological movements shape the structure of the press and society.
LO10 Discusses how network societies are shaped at the last point reached by information communication technologies today.
