Course Goal / Objective

The aim of the course is to create knowledge about the sources, effects, distribution dynamics, and transformation processes of plastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems, including the methods used in researching plastic and microplastic pollution

Course Content

What is plastic? What are the different types of plastic? Historical development of plastic production; Applications of plastics; Sources of plastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems; Pathways of plastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems; Agricultural use of plastics; Effects of plastic on soil ecosystems; Classification of plastic pollutants according to size and shape; Microplastics; The dynamics of microplastic pollution; Accumulation areas of microplastic pollution in terrestrial environments; The effect of microplastic pollution on soil organisms; Microplastic pollution and related chemical pollution; Methods of microplastic pollution research; Methods of macroplastic pollution research; and Plastic and microplastic pollution in Turkish soils will be explained using various sources and recent scientific studies.
