Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to introduce students to the fundamental processes of industrial ceramic design. Students learn the properties of plaster, practice mixing and casting techniques, explore sgraffito decoration methods, and experience mold-making techniques. Through practical applications, they understand the significance of plaster in ceramic production, create tile models, apply decorative techniques, and take molds of their designs. Students grasp essential mold-making techniques used in industrial ceramics and develop practical skills through hands-on work. By the end of the course, they gain proficiency in plaster-based techniques, enhance their material awareness, and acquire the ability to create production-ready designs. This course serves as a foundation for advanced studies in plaster forming and casting techniques in future semesters.
Course Content
This course serves as an introduction to industrial ceramic design processes, providing students with fundamental knowledge and skills in plaster material and essential techniques. The course covers the physical and chemical properties of plaster, including water-plaster ratio, mixing techniques, and the setting process. Students create a tile model using plaster, apply surface refinement techniques, and gain experience in surface design through sgraffito decoration methods. Following the decoration applications, the course moves on to the mold-making process, where students learn both single-part and multi-part mold-making techniques. Subsequently, liquid clay casting techniques are introduced, allowing students to experience ceramic production processes using plaster molds. In the later weeks, surface applications and decoration techniques are explored, focusing on glazing methods and surface treatments. The course also covers firing processes, detailing kiln programming and firing techniques. By the end of the semester, students present their projects, which include tile models, sgraffito decorations, and plaster molds, as part of the technical and aesthetic evaluation process. Supported by hands-on activities and technical demonstrations, this course enables students to grasp the fundamental processes involved in industrial ceramic production.
