Course Goal / Objective
Cinema and Geopolitics is an elective course that provides a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between film production, distribution, screening, and consumption in the context of geopolitics. This course seeks to explore how various conceptualizations of cinema, such as Hollywood Cinema, European Art Cinema, Third World Cinema, and Political Cinema, are shaped and influenced by geopolitical relationships.
Course Content
The course examines the relationship between cinematic aesthetics, content, and technique and the geopolitical contexts that shape them. In this regard, the course offers an in-depth investigation of the geopolitical factors that shape the production, distribution, and reception of cinema across different regions of the world. Through a critical analysis of films from different regions, the course explores the ways in which cinema has been used as a tool of geopolitical power, reflecting and shaping dominant political and cultural narratives. Students will examine the role of film in constructing national and cultural identities, as well as the ways in which it can subvert dominant narratives and give voice to marginalized communities. The course also explores the various mechanisms of film distribution, from Hollywood’s dominant role in the global film market to the emergence of alternative modes of distribution such as film festivals and online streaming platforms. Through this analysis, students will gain an understanding of the economic, cultural, and political implications of film circulation. In addition, the course critically examines the relationship between cinema and geopolitical conflict, including the ways in which cinema has been used to promote and justify war, as well as the ways in which it can be used to challenge dominant narratives and promote peace. Overall, the course offers students a nuanced understanding of the complex and dynamic relationship between cinema and geopolitics, providing them with the critical tools to engage with the political and cultural dimensions of film production, distribution, and consumption.
