Course Goal / Objective

The course reviews sources and types of stone and other materials that appear in prehistoric sites, and discusses what these materials imply about prehistoric behaviors within a region.

Course Content

Prehistoric people transformed many natural materials into tools and other objects. Identifying the sources of stones and raw materials is a first step toward analysis of how prehistoric people used and combined natural materials, moved materials within a region or exchanged them between regions, or gave certain materials symbolic importance. The course examines different raw materials and the various forms they take in nature, and different ways prehistoric people used these raw materials.
