Course Goal / Objective

The course aims to examine the concept and practices of surveillance in the context of power relations from a historical perspective. It targets the discussion of concepts related to surveillance such as panopticon, biopower, biopolitics, control, tracking, and surveillance by algorithms through current media content and examples from different countries.

Course Content

The course initially explores J. Bentham's panoptic architectural design model, developed in the 18th century and frequently referenced in contemporary surveillance studies. Following this, M. Foucault's studies on power and surveillance, which adapt Bentham's panopticon to society as a whole, are examined. After addressing surveillance studies during the electronic media era, the course delves into algorithmic surveillance in the new media age, with a particular focus on surveillance and tracking on social media platforms. Examples from different countries (e.g., China) and recent surveillance practices (e.g., during the Covid-19 pandemic) are discussed. Finally, the course covers practices of resistance against surveillance.
