Course Goal / Objective

Role of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystem toxicity, differences between aquatic organisms in toxic flora, mechanism of uptake and excretion of metals, properties of sensitive markers in metabolic system, role of enzymatic and non-enzymatic parameters in toxic response

Course Content

Cellular responses to heavy metals at cellular level; xenobiotic metabolism, metal toxicity, mechanisms of retrieval and excretion, original detoxification organs in fish, importance of sensitive biomarkers in toxic response, characteristics of specific biomarkers, possible reactions of various organisms in acute and chronic toxic effects, DNA damage due to metal toxicity, DNA repair, Reactive oxide types, oxidative stress, antioxidant system and parameters, ozmoregulation system and Adenosine triphosphatases, various methods used as early warning system in ecotoxicology are described.
