Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to grasp general information about theory and scientific research and the development of the concept of mass communication; to have knowledge about the basic theoretical approaches in the field of mass communication. In this context, it is aimed that students will learn different paradigmatic approaches and analyze the similarities and differences between them.

Course Content

In this course, we will primarily focus on the concepts of theory, paradigm and scientific method in social sciences. Then, by mentioning the early theories of mass communication historically, liberal and critical approaches, which are the two main schools in the field of mass communication, will be introduced. In this context, As an early period, the communication researches of the Chicago School, the strong effects paradigm, then the limited effects approach will be discussed. After discussing mass media models, critical communication theories will be introduced encompassssing Frankfurt School, the tradition of British Cultural Studies and political economy approaches. In the last part of the course, network theory and the current approaches to communication practices will be discussed.
