Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of insect pests—and mites in particular—as well as other harmful organisms in forest ecosystems. Students will learn to identify pest species that damage forest trees and understory vegetation, understand their biology and life cycles, and assess their impacts on forest ecosystem health. Additionally, the course will cover control methods—including cultural, biological, mechanical, and chemical strategies—and evaluate these methods within the framework of sustainable forestry principles.
Course Content
This course focuses on insect pests and other animal-origin pests that cause significant economic and ecological damage in forest trees and natural forest ecosystems. Particular emphasis will be placed on pest species affecting both coniferous and broadleaf trees, including but not limited to Pinus brutia, Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris, fir, spruce, oak, hornbeam, beech, poplar, and ash. The course will provide detailed information on the identification, biology, ecology, damage symptoms, and population dynamics of these pests. In addition, the roles of wood borers, foliage and shoot pests, root pests, secondary pests, and vector species will be examined. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles will be discussed, covering cultural, biological, biotechnical, mechanical, and chemical control methods. The course will also highlight the environmental and ecological implications of pest management strategies.
