Course Goal / Objective

To enable students to create scientifically accurate and visually effective illustrations from translational and biomedical research outputs; to develop skills for producing publication-ready figures, graphical abstracts, posters, and presentation materials while preserving data and image integrity; and to build visual communication competence aligned with ethics, copyright/licensing, and accessibility principles.

Course Content

This course teaches how to communicate biomedical and translational research accurately and clearly through scientific visuals that meet publication standards. Students practice creating schematics, experimental workflows, mechanism models, study design figures, data visualizations (plots, heatmaps, volcano plots, network diagrams), presentation of microscopy and multi-omics outputs, graphical abstracts, and figures for posters and slides. Core principles include visual hierarchy, layout and composition, color and typography, legends and scaling, iconography, accessibility (color-vision friendly design), data integrity and reproducibility, copyright and licensing, ethical image editing, and compliance with journal/institutional guidelines. The course is workshop-based; each student develops a figure set and a graphical abstract based on their own thesis/project data.

Course Precondition

No prerequisites. Basic research methods and data literacy are recommended.

Resources

No required textbook. Lecture notes, templates, and guidelines will be provided by the instructor.

Notes

Journal figure and graphical abstract guidelines (Nature, Cell Press, Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, etc.). COPE and relevant publication ethics resources. Creative Commons licensing and copyright guidance. Color-vision deficiency and accessible design guidelines. Tools: BioRender, Inkscape/Illustrator, PowerPoint/Keynote, GraphPad Prism, visualization outputs from R/Python, ImageJ/Fiji, Affinity Designer (if available).
