Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to teach imaging techniques and image processing methods used in plant phenotyping, and to enable students to analyze plant traits (such as leaf area, growth, and stress conditions) through images, as well as to develop skills in artificial intelligence and digital-based phenotyping applications.

Course Content

This course covers advanced imaging systems and image processing techniques used in plant phenotyping. The content includes RGB (Red-Green-Blue) imaging for analyzing leaf color and morphology; multispectral imaging for assessing plant health and stress using multiple wavelength bands; hyperspectral imaging for analyzing chemical and physiological plant traits using hundreds of narrow spectral bands; and thermal imaging for detecting plant surface temperature, water stress, and stomatal closure. It also includes the calculation and interpretation of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for assessing vegetation greenness and photosynthetic activity, and SPAD measurements for estimating leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen status. In addition, the course covers image preprocessing, morphological analysis, object detection, classification, drone- and sensor-based phenotyping applications, and artificial intelligence-based phenotyping approaches.

Course Learning Outcomes

Order Course Learning Outcomes
LO01 Gains knowledge about LiDAR, RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral, and thermal imaging systems used in cereals, and is able to explain their principles and applications in plant phenotyping studies.
LO02 Calculates and interprets indices such as NDVI and SPAD, and evaluates plant photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll content, and nutritional status.
LO03 Data Collection and Digital Phenotyping: Collects data using different imaging sensors in field and controlled environment experiments, processes the acquired images, and performs digital phenotyping of plant traits.
LO04 Stress Detection and Yield Analysis: Uses imaging data to detect abiotic and biotic stress symptoms in cereals, analyzes plant growth trends, and makes inferences for yield estimation.
