Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to analyse datasets obtained from qualitative research in a systematic, valid and ethical manner. The course will cover the philosophical foundations of qualitative data analysis, coding processes, theme development, interpretation, validity and reliability criteria, researcher positioning, and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software. The aim is for students to be able to analyse different types of data, such as interviews, focus groups, observations, documents and digital data

Course Content

Can explain the fundamental paradigms and approaches of qualitative data analysis. Can organise, code and categorise raw qualitative data. Can apply inductive and deductive analysis processes. Can compare thematic analysis, content analysis, discourse analysis and narrative analysis. Can develop a coding manual and report on the analysis process in a transparent manner. Can evaluate validity, reliability, credibility and ethical principles. Can understand the basic principles of software such as NVivo, MAXQDA or ATLAS.ti. Can present qualitative analysis results in accordance with academic writing standards.
