Course Goal / Objective

The general aim of course is to develop students’ skills in map reading, interpretation, and practical application; to enable them to analyze maps of different scales and types; to help them evaluate geographical data through maps; and to teach modern cartographic techniques and geographical data production processes in a practical manner. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to gain knowledge and skills in coordinate systems, scale calculations, topographic analysis, profile drawing, orientation, and basic map drawing techniques.

Course Content

This course covers introduction, course competencies and materials, the shape and dimensions of the Earth, units and unit conversions, scale, classification of maps, map reading, basic calculations on a plane, map projections, the UTM projection and coordinate system, the national map sheet index, map applications, and GPS navigation.

Course Precondition

Having completed the General Physical Geography course.
