Course Goal / Objective

At the end of this course, the student will be able to: analyze the equilibrium conditions of rigid bodies, calculate the stresses and deformations occurring in machine parts under various loads, and apply safe design criteria.

Course Content

The Mechanics of Materials course combines the principles of statics and strength of materials, which form the foundation of engineering, to examine the behavior of structural elements under external forces. Within the scope of this course, static concepts such as the equilibrium conditions of rigid bodies, free-body diagrams, and support reactions are covered, alongside fundamental principles of strength of materials including stress, strain, bending, and torsion occurring in materials.

Course Learning Outcomes

Order Course Learning Outcomes
LO01 By analyzing the static equilibrium of rigid bodies, one can draw free-body diagrams and calculate support reactions under planar force systems.
LO02 Can define the concepts of normal stress, shear stress, and strain occurring in machine elements under external loads.
LO03 Capable of determining normal force, shear force, and bending moment values in structural elements like beams and shafts.
LO04 Can calculate the strength of beams under bending and circular shafts under torsion, and establish safe working limits.
LO05 Understands the importance of the factor of safety in design by utilizing material properties (yield strength, tensile strength, etc.) and can select appropriate cross-sectional dimensions or material types for a given loading condition.
