Course Goal / Objective
Define the 'problematic soils' with regard to factors limiting the production and introduce the methods to improve such soils. Dominantly, saline and alkaline soils are considered in this course.
Course Content
Definition and geographical distribution of problematic soils: saline, alkaline, calcareous, acidic, sloppy, organic, vertisol. Characteristics of problematic soil limiting the production activities, possible use of such soils. Formation of saline and alkaline soils. Salinity brought by irrigation, water balance leaching fraction. Reclamation of saline and alkaline soils. Lime requirement for acidic soils.
